Can Meditation Change You?

by Dr. Miguel Farias & Catherine Wikholm
Watkins Publishing

Although I am still reading this book, I wanted to tell you about it right away. This is not a self-help book. Rather, it is one that explores the effects of meditation and yoga, asking the questions: Can meditation change us? And can it change us in a negative way? Is it possible that, despite all the recent talk about mindfulness practice, this isn’t for everyone?

The Buddha Pill takes a balanced view of meditative techniques arguing that personal change effected by these spiritual practices varies widely from one person to another. Peace and compassion might not come for everyone or it might not be lasting.

There’s lots of research in the book and many fascinating accounts from gurus to prisoners. The authors are psychologists and worked together for many years on this research project.

Whether you currently practice some form of meditation, are thinking about it, or – most importantly – teach meditation, this book is a must-read. You don’t have to agree with everything, but being aware of the ideas presented is very importent.
